Aspen Journalism
Aspen, Colorado
Brent Gardner-Smith

Founded in January 2011, Aspen Journalism is a local, nonprofit, and investigative news organization.

Introduction by publisher

Aspen Journalism is an independent nonprofit news organization that produces in-depth and investigative journalism.

Our mission is to inform citizens on issues relevant to the communities in the Roaring Fork River watershed, the Western Slope, the state of Colorado, and the West.

We often collaborate with other news organizations on stories and projects, including the Aspen Daily News, The Aspen Times and the Glenwood Springs Post Independent.

Our executive director and editor is Brent Gardner-Smith, who is currently reporting on water in Colorado.

Since being launched in January 2011, Aspen Journalism has worked with a number of freelance journalists to produce quality reporting on a range of subjects and we're proud to feature their bylines on our stories.

Effective engagement practice

We reach our target audience primarily through collaborations with the Aspen Daily News and The Aspen Times and other local news organizations and the subsequent aggregation and distribution of our stories via email and social media. We also publish on our AspenJournalism.org website and our versions of stories are often linked to annotated documents via DocumentCloud.

Business challenge

Relying on local philanthropic donors has proven to be a sustainable approach for Aspen Journalism.
