Chalkbeat New York used to be Gotham Schools. It is a founding bureau of Chalkbeat, a nonprofit network of schools sites formed in 2013. Chalkbeat was co-founded by Education News Colorado (now Chalkbeat Colorado) and has opened news operations in Indiana and Tennessee. Chalkbeat was granted nonprofit tax status by the IRS in 2014.
